Tutoring takes the player from where they are in their development and works at improving their basic fundamentals. The training is specific to the needs of the player. This allows for development or improvement with the kind of focused attention to detail which is generally not available during most team practices. The important fundamental skills often regress due to the lack of opportunity to work at “teaching speed” so that the muscles have a chance to learn and then stabilize the required movement sequence and develop competent repeatability. The instruction is done in small groups of from one to a maximum of four players.
Setter tutoring
For setters, the focus is on the many footwork elements and combinations which allow the athlete to get to the ball in the correct body orientation, on time and on balance so that the ball can be delivered to the various attacking zones with consistency.
See: Setter Program Outline
Passer / attacker tutoring
For attackers, the focus is on approach, arm swing technique that avoids injury to the shoulder, footwork variations for the different attacks (i.e. power attack is different than middle attack is different from slide attack) including one foot and two foot takeoffs. Most attackers are also the passers on the team. Passing is a critical skill that must be incorporated into tutoring sessions to develop the overall skills of the player. Testimonials:
"Hello Rick,
my daughter plays with T-West and had a few clinics with you last season. Since then she joined in at Victory Volleyball for a Winter Camp and again recently for one of your summer camps. We've noticed her skills improve immensely over the past year and she is eager to do some 1-on-1 instruction with you. Are you available for private lessons?" - 09/11/09
"Hi Rick,
my son attended your 1 on 1 tutor lessons. I must tell you that your technical knowledge of the game and your ability to teach young athletes is outstanding. Your private lessons (with a particular focus on technical mechanics) were a major contributor to my son raising his game SIGNIFICANTLY and at the end of the season winning the MVP award at the U15 national championships in Calgary. I highly recommend your 1on1 training to any youth volleyball player - from beginner to advanced." - 09/28/09
"Hi Rick,
I thought you might enjoy having a pic of the girls winning BRONZE last weekend and coming in 3rd in Province !! Thank you for all your efforts and guidance throughout the season. Julia very much appreciates your critical eye and constructive comments. The team could not have done it without you too !!" - 05/05/10
